Zwick Forges Links with Vulcan SFM

Vulcan SFM

Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd has established an industry leading test house facility at its Brightside Lane headquarters in the UK.

The facility is operated by its specialist subsidiary – Vulcan SFM, and allows Forgemasters to perform a wide range of materials testing and places the company at the forefront of materials testing within the UK’s heavy engineering industries.

The on-site facility enables Forgemasters to conduct its own heat treatment and hardness, tensile and impact tests, verifying the structural and molecular integrity of the company's products.

The laboratory staff includes test house manager Ian Hunter and a team of four skilled engineers and technicians.

The test house is a modern and comprehensive facility where specific tests are carried out. The state-of-the-art machinery includes two Zwick 450 Joule Charpy Impact Testing Machines, a 250kN Zwick Tensile Testing Machine, Indentec 4150 AK Rockwell Hardness Tester and Indentec ZHV30 Micro and Macro Vickers Hardness Testers. The air conditioned machine shop and test house, which has cost SFIL £450,000, allows the staff to machine and test in a constantly temperature-controlled environment.

Test House Manager Ian Hunter said “It was clear that we had to differentiate ourselves from the other test labs in the area, so we knew we had to be more technically advanced than the rest.  That’s why we chose Zwick for our large capacity testing machines.”

“We were especially impressed with the Zwick Charpy Impact Machines as the operator can easily adjust the forces required, the weights can be upgraded and the motorized pendulum was very important for us from a Health & Safety point of view.”
